The 2024 edition
Takeovers
Throughout the week a number of youth had the opportunity to participate in a takeover. This is where a young advocate joined an influential decision-maker and accompanied them for the day. Wearing their gender glasses, the young advocate took over some of the decision-maker’s responsibilities and roles within the day. For the 2024 EWAG edition, we had takeovers hosted by: the EU’s External Action Service (EEAS) and the EEAS’s Special Envoy on Climate and Environment Ambassador; Anthony Agotha, MEP Benedetta Scuderi and the communications team of the European Parliament’s Green party.
Young advocates at the European Parliament
On Wednesday, a youth-led public event in the European Parliament was held. The youth advocates presented issues that mattered the most to them and exchanged with EU institutions on steps to take to advance these issues.
EWAG and EU Member States breakfast meeting
The young advocates then met with EU member States over breakfast and brought girls’ rights to the heart of EU decision-making. The breakfast was hosted by the Permanent Representation of Ireland to the European Union.
Meeting with the UK Mission to the EU
The young advocates also got the opportunity to have an informal coffee moment with the UK Mission to the EU to ask questions on what they are doing to advance girls rights as a major global actor and to advocate for the main issues faced by girls in today’s world that they want to see addressed.
2024 EU assessment paper
To mark the International Day of the Girl 2024, the EWAG coalition of civil society organisations published the “Summary of the Civil Society Assessment of EU policies (2019-2023) advancing girls’ rights”.
The paper provides an overview of the positive advancements of EU policies (2019-2023), as well as shortcomings, and puts forward a set of recommendations on how to better advance girls’ rights in EU external action onwards in the new legislative term (2024-2029).
